What happens on the day

Most of a neat install is the bit nobody sees. This is how one camera goes on, from the pencil mark to the app.

I walk round with you first.
We pick what each camera needs to see: the drive, the front door, the back gate. Then I look at what is behind each spot, because the cable has to get from there to the recorder.
Measure, mark, one hole.
The drill point is marked where the camera base will sit over it. On brick and stone I go for the mortar line. The hole gets drilled once.
A draw wire down the cavity.
A steel draw wire goes into the hole and finds its way down the gap between your outer and inner wall. The camera cable follows it.
Out beside the recorder.
The cable comes through indoors where the recorder lives, usually a cupboard, and gets tidied there.
Camera on, app on your phone.
The camera goes on over the hole. I set the recorder up, put Hik-Connect on your phone, and show you live view and playback before I leave.

Make: Hikvision
Cameras: Turret or bullet as standard. A PTZ where one spot has to cover a lot. HiLook on the entry package.
Night: Infrared on the standard cameras, a black and white picture in the dark. ColorVu keeps the colour.
Recorder: A Hikvision NVR with a hard drive, indoors, plugged into your router. The footage stays in the house.
App: Hik-Connect. Live view, playback and alerts on your phone. Set up on the day.
Cabling: One cable per camera, through the cavity. The same cable carries the power. Zero on show.
Alerts: AcuSense on the 4K packages tells a person or a vehicle from a cat or a branch.

A house and a shop are different jobs.

At a house

Four cameras is the usual: drive, front door, back garden, side. They go under the eaves or on the corner, the cable drops through the cavity, and the recorder sits in a cupboard. From the street you see the cameras and nothing else.

At a shop or a unit

Higher walls, longer runs, and often no cavity to drop into, so the cable goes in containment or above the ceiling instead. Tills, doors, the stockroom, the yard. I survey commercial jobs before I price them, because the building decides most of it.

What moves the price

Four things, in the order they matter.

How many cameras. Two covers a front and a back. Four covers a house. Six to eight is a bigger plot or a shop. Each one is a camera, a cable run and a hole.

What you want at night. Infrared is the standard and does the job. 4K gives you more detail to zoom into. ColorVu keeps the colour after dark, and costs more per camera.

Where the cable has to go. A camera above the recorder is a short run. A camera on a detached garage or across a yard is a long one. Long runs and outbuildings get priced at the survey.

The building. Brick and stone with a cavity is straightforward. Solid stone, render, a flat, or a shop with high ceilings takes longer. Commercial jobs are surveyed first.

Cameras that see past your boundary

A camera on a house will usually take in a bit of pavement, a bit of road, or the edge of next door’s drive. That is normal. It is worth knowing where you stand.

If your cameras only ever capture your own property, data protection law does not apply to you. If they capture beyond your boundary, it does. The Information Commissioner’s Office publishes guidance for homes with CCTV. The gist: have a clear reason for the cameras, put a sign up so people know, keep footage no longer than you need it, and be ready to give someone a copy if they ask for footage of themselves.
